Why Study Fashion Design?

For some, careers in fashion design are all about the glitz and glamour. For others, it’s about self-expression and the opportunity to express total creative freedom. In both instances, a career as a fashion designer can be rewarding in more ways than one. As with most creative industries, getting started in fashion design means finding a way to get that initial ‘foot in the door’. Creativity and inspiration are important, but so too is a robust understanding of the way the industry works. If you expect to be taken seriously as a fashion designer, you need to demonstrate your commitment to influencers and decisionmakers. Career opportunities are wide open, but this is a seriously competitive field where only the strongest and most talented survive.

Module three turns attention to the four most important ‘principles’ of fashion design - Emphasis, Balance, Harmony and Repetition. Each of which is considered by way of its individual importance and the role it plays in a finished fashion product.

Unit 4. Dress Designing Elements

The fundamentals of dress designing are introduced in module four, in which learners are presented with several helpful tools and techniques for designing better dresses. Course content also examines the various different types of dresses and their characteristics, along with the process of transforming an initial design concept into a desirable garment.

Unit 5. The Use of Colour in Fashion Design

The importance of appropriate colour selection and the art of successfully combining colours are discussed at length in module five. The reasons some colours work in combination together while others clash is also discussed, along with the extent to which colour can influence desirability and the way a garment is interpreted by others.

Unit 6. Stages in the Design Process

Module six provides an in-depth overview of each of the key stages in the fashion design process, from initial visualisation all the way through to final finishing touches. Candidates consider the importance of approaching garment design in a structured manner, ensuring each stage is given sufficient focus and priority.

Unit 7. Fashion Sketching

Tips and guidelines for effective fashion sketching are presented and discussed in module seven, in which candidates learn how to present their ideas to others in the fashion community. Bringing the course to a close, module 11 details the steps involved in starting and running a successful fashion design business from scratch.
