Environmental Certificates Online: Key Topics

The course consists of the following seven units:

Unit 1 – Introduction to Environment

In the first unit, candidates are introduced to the concept of environment incorporating theory on ecosystems, the food web and the food chain. The concept of the man-made environment in how it differs from and is affected by the natural environment is also introduced.

Unit 2 – Global Environmental Issues

The following unit focuses on worldwide environmental issues incorporating the most prevalent challenges and threats society faces today. Candidates are introduced to global warming, climate change and threats to biodiversity.

Unit 3 – Effects of Overexploitation of Biological Resources

Course content then moves on to the subject of biological resource overexploitation, discussing the causes, effects and potential solutions to this growing global problem. The third unit also introduces the topic of environmental protection.

Unit 4 – Effects of Urbanisation and Agriculture

The primary focus of the fourth unit is agriculture and urbanisation – specifically in relation to the problems and challenges created by both. Candidates are introduced to traditional and contemporary agriculture along with how the human environment is affected by agriculture.

Unit 5 – Environmental Planning

The concept of environmental planning and the evolution of environmental management represent the key topics covered in the fifth unit. Sustainable development as a concept is introduced along with the goals and fundamentals of environmental planning.

Unit 6 – Energy Management

Course content then moves onto energy management, incorporating essential insights on the subjects of ecosystem geography, recycling, the use of fossil fuels and general energy management basics. Unit 6 builds on the important teachings of Unit 2.

Unit 7 – Environmental Management Systems

In the seventh and final unit, candidates are introduced to a number of the most important environmental management systems currently in use. Along with environmental accounting and energy-efficiency, course content covers PDCA, EMAS Description, ISO Standards and more.
