Course Syllabus

The course consists of the following six units:

Unit 1 – The Construction Industry

The course begins with an introduction to the construction industry in general, incorporating the important role of the construction supervisor and manager. Candidates explore the concepts of labour quality and productivity, along with vital supervision, inspection and testing processes.

Unit 2 – Project Management and Administration

In the second unit, focus shifts to the management of building projects from an administrative perspective. Along with a complete introduction to the project life cycle, candidates explore the three key project phases – Initiation, Execution and Control.

Unit 3 – Construction Cost Estimating

This unit introduces the subject of cost estimation for construction projects, enhancing candidates’ understanding of accurate forecasting, budgeting and revision of costs/budgets in accordance with internal and external pressures/influences.

Unit 4 – Site Organization

The fourth unit turns attention to the logistical side of site operation and organisation. Candidates investigate a series of crucial considerations, ranging from site roads and access to accommodation to equipment storage and movement of equipment both on and off-site.

Unit 5 – Material Management

This unit takes a deeper look into the specifics of purchasing and managing building materials, along with potential issues and professional approaches to integrated materials management. Candidates discover how management of materials can have wide-reaching implications on building projects.

Unit 6 – Human Resource Management

Rounding off the course, unit 6 takes candidates away from site management to introduce the importance of professional human resource management. Along with exploring key personnel sources, the unit covers employee induction, training programs, retention and deployment.
