Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring QLS Level 2

Course Overview

Coaching and Mentoring Distance Learning

Here’s a question – what’s the difference between a coach/mentor and a trainer? The answer – coaches and mentors nurture development by inspiring others, while trainers simply provide direct instructions. Suffice to say, becoming a genuinely effective and successful mentor can be quite the challenge, as getting it right means mastering a variety of interconnected disciplines. Nevertheless, for those with the required skills, talents and personal attributes, the role of the coach/mentor can be one of unique rewards and opportunities

This Coaching and Mentoring Distance Learning, course builds an important foundation upon which to continue building professional-level coaching and mentoring skills. Candidates explore the ways in which inspirational guidance, the sharing of wisdom and generally leading by example can be infinitely more powerful than telling other what to do or how to do it. Four intensive course units introduce crucial coaching and mentoring skills, assessment and evaluation, the provision of feedback and the development of powerful interpersonal skills.

Course Syllabus

Coaching and Mentoring Distance Learning, course consists of the following four units:

Unit 1 – Introduction to Coaching and Mentoring

In the opening course unit, candidates are guided through what it is that the coach/mentor does and the role they play in the modern business/organisation. A variety of key coaching skills and techniques are introduced, along with effective approaches to assessment and scoring for the monitoring and management of progress.

Unit 2 – Interpersonal Communication Skills

The primary core focus of Unit 2 is the development of strong interpersonal communication skills, along with their importance in the field of coaching and mentoring. Candidates also investigate effective probing techniques, along with the importance of listening rather than simply hearing others and how to become a better listener in general.

Unit 3 – Critical Coaching Skills

Course content then moves onto core coaching skills, incorporating an investigation of common learning styles and principles, what it takes to become an effective coach and an investigation of the benefits/consequences matrix. Candidates are also introduced to the methodology of setting goals in accordance with the SPIRIT model – Specific, Prizes, Individual, Review, Inspiring, Time-Bound.

Unit 4 – The Coaching Model

In the final course unit, the coaching model is explored in greater depth with specific focus on common coaching challenges. Candidates are guided through common coaching problems and their respective causes/solutions, along with the importance of providing proactive feedback and a breakdown of the ‘Four Steps’ coaching model.

I think that Brentwood Open Learning College was one of the best choices of my life. I found lessons very interesting, helpful and stimulating. For example, during this course, I've learned that self-confidence is really important characteristic of every coach, what also helped me to get much more confident in my everyday life, too. I am now always thinking about things from a broader point of view. My world has been expanded significantly and with it I have expanded as a person. I am much more self-aware and already feel more confident and independent than before. That's the reason why I would recommend the Courses on Brentwood Open Learning College to absolutely anyone!
