Certificate in Team Leading Skills (Level 3)

Course Overview

Leadership Skills Course

The success of any manager or supervisor will always be measured in accordance with the performance and professionalism of the team they oversee.  The simple fact of the matter is that there is a very big difference between telling a team what to do and inspiring team members to aspire to reach their full potential, day in and day out.  While anyone can pen a list of instructions and delegate duties, leading a team by example and generally becoming a positive role model for others is an altogether more difficult challenge.  The rewards that come with the development of outstanding team leader skills however can be attractive to say the least.

This Leadership Skills Course, represents the ideal course for those looking to develop professional-level supervisory skills and the core qualities it takes to inspire others. Contemporary team leaders are expected to master a wide variety of disciplines, including conflict resolution, constant problem solving, motivating others even during the most difficult of times and generally building a sense of unity and cohesion between all team members. Certain character traits are essential for becoming a successful team leader – as is a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of what is expected of you.

Over the course of six intensive units, candidates are introduced to the roles and responsibilities of the modern team leader, along with both the specifics and the importance of creating a strong team culture. The development and maintenance of outstanding interpersonal communications skills also feature heavily, along with the importance of effective listening skills and various approaches to employee motivation. Conflict resolution is also introduced, along with how to deal with difficult employees and an overview of disciplinary procedures.

Course Syllabus

Team Leading Course: Key Topics

This Leadership Skills Course consists of the following six units:

Unit 1 – Effective Leadership

In the opening course unit, candidates are guided through the concept of effective leadership by way of what it is that makes a leader and how a true leader differs from a manager.  The various responsibilities of those in supervisory positions are outlined and explored, along with how to begin planning for success as a team leader and the idea of the centred leadership model.

Unit 2 – The Situational Leadership Model

The second course unit provides candidates with an insightful introduction to the situational leadership model, which essentially argues that there is in fact no single style of leadership that is ‘best’ of all.  This critical leadership theory instead suggests that approaches to leadership must be determined in accordance with a variety of variables specific to the situation/business in question.

Unit 3 – Developing a High-Performing Team

The creation and maintenance of a high quality team represents the primary theme in Unit 3, in which candidates learn the important advantages and disadvantages of teams, how to solve common problems that may affect contemporary working teams and ultimately how to lead a team to success.

Unit 4 – Communication Skills

Course content in the fourth unit focuses on communication skills, incorporating an overview of potential communication barriers, the importance of developing outstanding listening skills and a series of effective probing techniques.  The communication process within the modern team environment is also explored.

Unit 5 – Motivating Employees

An overview of the importance of employee motivation follows in the fifth unit, which introduces candidates to the identification of motivators, a series of important motivational theories and how to create a climate of motivation within a working team.  The role the supervisor/team leader plays in team motivation is also investigated in-depth.

Unit 6 - Dealing with Conflict

In the sixth and final course unit, candidates are guided through a variety of conflict resolution theories, concepts and practical teachings.  How to deal with conflict within the team on a day to day basis is investigated, along with the importance of taking a structured approach to conflict resolution and how to manage disciplinary issues in more severe cases.
