This course consists of the following five units:

Unit 1 - An Introduction to the Interior Design Profession

The course begins with an insightful introduction to professional interior design, including the role of the interior designer within the industry. Candidates are introduced to the basics of residential design and the importance of strong designer-client relationships.

Unit 2 - Design Elements

The second unit moves onto the four most important design elements – Space, Colour, Patterns and Textures. The unit investigates both the specifics and the importance of each in relation to their role in professional interior design, both independently and collaboratively.

Unit 3 - The Principles of Design

An introduction to the principles of design follows in the third unit, which explores several key considerations including Contrast, Balance, Scale, Proportion, Unity, Variety and Emphasis. Candidates learn how and why each must be considered with equal importance.

Unit 4 - Room Elements

This unit moves away from basic principles to instead focus on specific room elements and the role they play in interior design. Along with interior lighting and wall coverings, the unit explores the selection and use of appropriate furniture, fixtures and artwork.

Unit 5 - Working on Projects

The final unit of the course builds on the four prior units by introducing candidates to effective project planning and implementation. From gathering information to proactive planning and producing projective sketches, candidates discover how to bring their creative visions to life.
