Why Study Child Psychology?

The field of child psychology is one of unique relevance and importance worldwide.  Over a remarkably short period of time, children undergo significant cognitive, physical, social and emotional change. Our experiences and exposures to external stimuli during childhood can have a marked impact on every aspect of our lives as adults.  For the child psychologist, the challenge lies in assisting with the strong and healthy development of children from all backgrounds.  There can be little more rewarding than knowing your efforts as a child psychologist are changing lives for the better, every single day.  Whether already working with children or considering a radical change in career direction, this Level 5 Diploma in Child Psychology could be right up your street!

Course Syllabus

This exclusive Level 5 Diploma in Child Psychology provides an advanced overview of the most important concepts and teachings in the field of child psychology.  Each of the 12 course units concludes with an online assessment for submission to your personally-assigned tutor:

An Introduction to Child Psychology

The course begins by providing learners with a detailed introduction to child psychology, both as a profession and a wider concept.  The functions and objectives of child psychology services are discussed, along with a breakdown of the developmental stages during childhood and the potential benefits of consulting with a child psychologist.

The Formation of Attachments (i)

A fascinating introduction to attachment theory follows in the second unit, which tracks the formation of attachments with other people throughout the different stages of childhood.  The fundamentals of evolutionary theory are also discussed, alongside the basics of Bowlby’s Attachment Theory.

The Formation of Attachments (ii)

Additional attachment theory concepts are introduced in module three, which furthers the teachings of the prior unit by introducing Harlow’s Studies of Monkeys and Attachments, Spitz’ Studies of Children in Institutions and other key child psychology theories.

Consequences of Breakdowns in Attachments

Course content then turns attention to the consequences associated with breakdowns in attachments.  Candidates learn how separation from parents and caregivers can influence various aspects of their development, while discussing the effects of bereavement, foster care and other causes of separation.

Influences on Development

Unit five brings developmental influences into discussion, exploring how the people, experiences and general stimuli children are exposed to can affect their development.  The capacity of various pressures and exposures to impact a child’s development at different stages during childhood is also discussed.

Social and Emotional Growth

A child’s journey towards established social and emotional growth is tracked and analysed in unit six.  Candidates also consider the various factors, individuals and experiences that can positively or negatively impact social and emotional growth.

Personality Development

Unit seven provides a fascinating overview of how children gradually build their own unique personalities.  Candidates consider character development throughout childhood and how internal and external influences alike can affect the personality and character a person ultimately develops.

Language Development

The importance of strong and confident speech and language development is examined in unit eight, in which candidates learn how common communication issues at various stages of childhood can be identified and addressed.  An introduction to lexical development theory is also provided.

Moral Development

A child’s ongoing development of a moral code is explored in the ninth unit, which documents key moral and ethical growth stages throughout childhood.  Once again, the individuals and influences (internal and external) that can affect moral and ethical development in childhood are brought into discussion.

Problems of Infancy

Unit 10 examines some of the most common psychological and developmental issues that occur during infancy.  Candidates study the causes and consequences of such issues, along with how they can be identified and addressed.

Problems in Childhood

Common problems in childhood are then discussed in unit 11, which again focuses on the causes, consequences, identification and resolution of such issues.

Problems in Adolescence

Concluding the course, unit 12 examines the potential for developmental issues to continue beyond childhood and into adolescence.  Several common examples of problems in adolescence are presented, along with their causes and effects respectively.
