Why Study Diet and Nutrition?

It’s often said that we are what we eat.  In which case, the vast majority of people could benefit from improvements to their eating habits.  The problem being that it’s not always obvious what we should and shouldn’t be consuming for the benefit of our health.  Dietary balance is a concept that varies significantly from one person to the next. We all rely on key nutrients to grow, develop and build strong natural defences, but precise dietary requirements are never the same from one person to the next.  This is where the field of diet and nutrition comes in - the science of improving human health and wellbeing the through informed dietary choices. Men, women and children of all ages rely on nutritionists to steer their lifestyles in a healthier direction.  From combating illness to weight loss to disease prevention, a balanced diet holds the key to a longer and happier life.

Course Syllabus

This exclusive Level 5 Diploma in Diet and Nutrition has been designed to mould and shape a new generation of successful nutritionists.  Study the fascinating effects our dietary choices have on human health and wellbeing, over a series of 15 engaging units as follows:

An Overview of Nutrition

The course begins with a fascinating exploration of nutrition as a concept, examining the various classes of nutrients and their functions in human health.  Candidates begin to build an understanding of the effects dietary habits can have on the human body, along with an overview of the body mass index (BMI) and the potential consequences of obesity.

Basics of Nutrition I

A more detailed examination of several key nutrients follows in unit two, with particularly strong focus on dietary fibre, protein and fat.  Learners discuss the benefits of healthy dietary fibre intake, the role of proteins in human health and why some types of dietary fats are considered ‘healthier’ than others.

Basics of Nutrition II

Nutrient functions and benefits are further discussed in unit three, which focuses on vitamins and minerals.  Candidates discuss the most important trace minerals and major minerals, the functions of key vitamins and how water-soluble vitamins differ from fat-soluble vitamins.

Digestion and Detoxification

A fascinating exploration of human digestion and detoxification follows in the fourth unit.  Candidates learn how digestive efficiency can have a direct impact on physical and psychological health alike, along with some of the most common digestive health issues and how they can be prevented or treated effectively.

Eating Disorders

Unit five provides an important introduction to some of the world’s most common and potentially deadly eating disorders.  The characteristics and consequences of bulimia, anorexia and binge eating are discussed, along with effective measures for detecting eating disorders and preventing them from occurring where possible.

Balancing the Diet

Candidates are then presented with the wide-reaching benefits of dietary balance, along with a detailed definition of a ‘balanced diet’ and the importance of sensible moderation. The role of the nutritionist in the preparation of eating plans for clients with specific diet requirements is also discussed at length.

Principles of Healthy Eating

Unit seven outlines the basic principles and fundamentals of healthy eating, while acknowledging how the term ‘healthy’ can be defined in many different ways.  Candidates are introduced to recommended daily intakes, how different cooking methods can affect the ‘healthiness’ of the resulting dish and the benefits of making positive, proactive dietary choices.

Nutrition and the Immune System

The extent to which the human body’s immune system relies on dietary balance is examined in unit eight.  Candidates learn how our everyday dietary choices have a direct impact on our natural defences, while discussing the causes and effects of food intolerances, allergies and sensitivities.

Diet and Disease

Unit nine looks at disease prevention through dietary balance on a wider level, detailing how the risk of developing certain diseases is directly affected by our dietary habits.  Examples of which include celiac disease, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease - many cases of which are considered preventable through simple lifestyle alterations.

Women’s Health

A fascinating exploration of women’s health follows in unit 10, which discusses the unique impact nutrient intake can have on a woman’s physical and psychological health.  The complexities of maintaining dietary balance during pregnancy are also discussed, along with the importance of controlled nutrient intake during later life.

Nutrition Requirements for Different People

Candidates then consider how different people during different life stages may have completely different dietary requirements.  The progression of nutrient requirements from infancy to adulthood and in later life is discussed, alongside the dietary requirements of individuals with health conditions or specific goals in mind.

Weight Control Management

Unit 12 provides a crash-course introduction to the science of effective weight control management.  Candidates learn what it means to maintain a ‘healthy’ weight, how what’s considered a healthy weight may differ from one person to the next and how simple dietary changes can make it easier to control weight for a lifetime.

Weight Loss Management

Course content then shifts focus to weight loss management, detailing the difference between healthy/controlled weight loss and crash dieting.  Learners examine the causes of weight gain, the importance of gradual weight loss and why some find it more difficult to lose weight than others.  Helpful tips and techniques for effective and permanent weight loss are also introduced.

Anti-Ageing Formulas

The capacity for dietary choices to affect the visual signs of ageing is explored in unit 14, in which candidates learn how it is possible to look and feel younger throughout life with a balanced and measured diet. The anti-ageing effects of key nutrients on more general physical health are also discussed.

The Role of a Nutritionist

Bringing the course to a close, unit 15 provides a fascinating introduction to the roles and responsibilities of the expert nutritionist.  Candidates discuss the functions and objectives of the services provided by nutritionists, typical reasons why clients consult with nutritionists worldwide and the various environments in which professional nutritionists work.
