Why Study Teaching Assistant Skills?

A teaching assistant role is ideal for anyone disinterested in the usual 9 to 5 office job.  Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t necessary to study for a degree-level qualification to work in education.  Worldwide, teaching assistants are trusted to ensure each and every pupil gets the most out of their time spent in school.  Both on a personal and academic level, teaching assistants nurture the growth and development of the students they work with.  Teaching assistants act as role models and guardians for students, providing the individual support every pupil needs to flourish.  An incredibly fulfilling profession, talented teaching assistants dedicate their careers to changing lives for the better.  With strong earnings potential and growing demand from employers worldwide, there’s never been a better time to consider a career as a teaching assistant.

Course Syllabus

This advanced Level 4 Teaching Assistant Diploma is open to anyone looking to build a rewarding and fulfilling career in a classroom setting.  Each of the five fascinating course units concludes with an online assessment, which your assigned tutor will mark and return with helpful feedback:

  • Unit 1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant

The course begins by taking a detailed look at the main duties and responsibilities of the teaching assistant, along with the most important qualities and characteristics needed to succeed in the field.  Candidates learn how teaching assistants play a key role in both the education and the personal development of those they work with.

  • Unit 2. Working in the School

Unit two turns attention to the unique challenges of everyday life when working in an educational setting.  Some of the more important clerical/admin duties of the teaching assistant are discussed, along with how teaching assistants ensure effective delivery of current curriculums, and how both attitude and approach must be carefully controlled in a school setting.

  • Unit 3. Working in the Classroom

Candidates are then introduced to the primary working environment of the teaching assistant - the classroom. An introduction to the National Literacy Strategy and the National Numeracy Strategy is provided, along with helpful tips and guidelines for working confidently and with a sense of authority in a classroom environment.

  • Unit 4. Supporting Pupils with Special Educational Needs

The fourth unit focuses on the importance of tailoring the support provided by teaching assistants to suit individual requirements and learning styles.  Some of the more common special educational needs in a typical classroom setting are presented, along with helpful guidelines for providing more effective specialist support.

  • Unit 5. Creating a Safe Learning Environment

Concluding the course, unit five examines the responsibilities of the teaching assistant in the development and maintenance of a safe and comfortable learning environment.  Some of the more common classroom health and safety challenges are discussed, along with the benefits of creating a safe and supportive environment for every student.
