The importance of the global fashion industry to contemporary society cannot be overstated. Throughout history, fashion has played a major role in the everyday lives of billions of people worldwide. Just as long as people care about looking good, the fashion industry will remain relevant, prestigious and limitlessly lucrative. With such huge competition, it takes more than creative vision and an eye for detail to break into the fashion industry. Drive, determination and ambition play a role, as does a detailed knowledge of how the industry works. Whether the dream is to secure a position with a revered fashion house or set up your own label from scratch, what better time than right now to get started?
Brentwood Open Learning College is proud to offer the web’s more accessible and enjoying distance learning opportunities. Lay the foundation for a rewarding career in fashion design, studying the basics of the industry and the profession over three detailed modules as follows:
Unit 1. Introduction to Fashion Design
Module one examines the functions of the contemporary fashion industry and its importance to society worldwide. The recent history and ongoing evolution of the fashion industry are also discussed, along with the concept of the fashion cycle, the everyday duties of the fashion designer and an overview of the most important trends of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Unit 2. Elements and Principles of Design
Module two examines the most important elements and principles of design, detailing how each plays an equally important contribution to a cohesive and seamless piece. The four primary design elements introduced are Colours, Shapes, Lines and Textures, alongside the four major design principles - Balance, Emphasis, Repetition and more.
Unit 3. The Use of Colour in Fashion Design
Module three discusses the importance of strategic colour selection, along with the extent to which colour can affect the interpretation and desirability of a garment. Candidates also consider how and why certain colour combinations work, while others ‘clash’ and are considered undesirable.
