Unit 1 – Introduction to Child Psychology

The first unit begins with a broad introduction to child psychology as a concept, incorporating the various areas/stages of child development and the importance of ongoing study. Candidates begin building an understanding of why child psychology is a crucially important subject area.

Unit 2 – The Formation of Attachments

In the second unit, course content moves onto the specifics of attachment based primarily around Bowlby's Attachment Theory. The unit introduces the concept of attachment, the formation of attachments and crucial evolutionary theory.

Unit 3 – Consequences of Attachment Breakdowns

The main focus of the third unit is the potential consequences in the event of attachment breakdowns, touching upon the cognitive development of children and how general development may be impacted. A series of parenting styles are also introduced.

Unit 4 – Personality Development

The fourth unit moves on to the development of personality and character during childhood. Course content covers the various types of children, how children begin to build a sense of self and the fundamentals of the theory of Erikson.

Unit 5 – Social Development

Socialisation and social development form the core focus of the fifth unit, which incorporates an introduction to childhood fears and how family factors can influence socialisation. Candidates also investigate a series of general age guidelines for gauging development.

Unit 6 – Development of Language

Speech and language development theory is introduced in this unit, incorporating essential teachings on linguistic processes, lexical development, communication evolution and the importance of strong speech and language skills. Further age guidelines are also introduced.

Unit 7 – Moral Development

In the seventh and final unit, course content moves on to the development of morals in children and the various stages of moral growth. Critical child development theory is introduced, including Freud's Theory of Psychosexual Development.
