This Child Psychology Online Course consists of the following units:

Unit 1 - Introduction to Child Psychology

The opening course unit provides candidates with a broad overview of child psychology in general, exploring what exactly child psychology is, the various stages of development, the differences between child growth and development and various associated theoretical teachings.

Unit 2 - The Formation of Attachments (1)

Attachment formation forms the core focus of the following two units, with an initial introduction to attachment and an investigation of Bowlby’s Attachment Theory. Candidates also explore the maternal deprivation hypothesis, along with all crucial core elements of evolutional theory.

Unit 3 - The Formation of Attachments (2)

Attachment continues into the third unit, which focuses more intensively on a variety of theories and hypotheses including Harlow’s Studies of Monkeys and Attachments, Spitz’ Studies of Children in Institutions and a series of internal working models.

Unit 4 - Consequences of Breakdowns in Attachments

Attachment breakdown follows in Unit 4, in which candidates explore a series of important series with regards to the effects and consequences of attachment breakdowns. Subtopics covered include child bereavement, how foster care affects a child’s development and a variety of childhood adjustment factors.

Unit 5 - Influences on Development

The fifth unit centres on the theme of the various influences that can impact the development of children. The unit breaks the subject down into social and cognitive development, discussing how and why a variety of influences and pressures can affect a child’s developmental progress.

Unit 6 - Social and Emotional Development

Course content in the following unit focuses on social and emotional development, breaking social development down to its most important core stages, outlining what exactly socialization refers to and introducing a series of external factors that are known to influence and affect social and emotional development.

Unit 7 - Personality Development

In Unit 7, candidates are introduced to a variety of the theoretical teachings in respect to personality development in children. Course content covers character development, personality manifestation and the way in which a variety of environmental factors/variables can influence character and personality development.

Unit 8 - Language Development

Speech and language development form the core focus of Unit 8, which introduces candidates to both childhood communication evolution and general lexical development theory. Content also covers a variety of common communication and learning difficulties, along with their respective causes, effects and potential remedies.

Unit 9 - Moral Development

The development of morals in children enters the discussion in Unit 9, incorporating an investigation of the key moral growth stages of children, how moral reasoning develops from pre-school to adulthood and an exploration of Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development.
