Why Study Business Improvement?

Business process improvement is a dynamic and wide-reaching specialism, concerning all aspects of how an organisation operates. Across all industries and sectors, the vast majority of small and large businesses alike share the same goal - growth, development and profitability. All of which is only possible if the organisation in question is committed to continuous improvement. There’s no such thing as a perfect business, meaning there is always room for improvement. For the skilled business improvement specialist, the challenge lies in identifying areas for improvement, capitalising on every opportunity and eliminating anything that simply isn’t working. Whether the dream is to run your own business an entrepreneur or to climb the ladder with an established employer, this Level 4 Business Improvement Diploma could help you take that next big step.

Course Syllabus

Brentwood Open Learning College is committed to the highest-quality online courses for motivated and hard-working candidates worldwide.  Build the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to thrive as a business improvement specialist, as you work your way through the seven course modules and a series of online assessments:

Module 1 – The Fundamentals of Business Process Management

The course begins with a detailed introduction to the concept of business process management, incorporating the roles and responsibilities of those who work in the field.  Candidates learn how all businesses must strive for continuous improvement to remain relevant, while exploring business analysis, the enterprise content management model and more.

Module 2 – The Vision Phase

The first of the six primary business improvement phases is presented in module two - the ‘vision’ phase. This is where the initial idea or concept is identified, visualised and communicated with other key stakeholders, perhaps individually or as part of a team.  Candidates consider the importance of objectivity and realistic limitations when establishing an initial vision.

Module 3 – The Design Phase

Modul three turns attention to the business improvement ‘design’ phase, which introduces several helpful tools and techniques such as flow charts and process mapping.  The importance of accurate and effective information gathering is also discussed, alongside current and future process-determining techniques in the field of business improvement.

Module 4 – The Modelling Phase

An overview of the ‘modelling’ phase follows in the fourth module, in which candidates also learn how to perform ‘what-if’ analysis and when it is appropriate to do so.  The advantages and disadvantages of interactive design are also discussed, along with the applications of breakdown modelling and an introduction to design testing.

Module 5 – The Execution Phase

Module five covers the execution phase - also referred to as the implementation phase.  Along with a series of tips and guidelines for successful and efficient implementation, candidates consider the advantages and disadvantages of process automation, scenarios where automation may not be the ideal solution and an overview of workflow engine implementation.

Module 6 – The Monitoring Phase

The ‘monitoring’ phase is detailed and discussed in the sixth module, alongside an introduction to the applications and potential benefits of Business Activity Monitoring (BAM).  Process mining as a business improvement tool/technique is also discussed, along with balanced scorecards and other useful performance monitoring tools.

Module 7 – The Optimising Phase

The course concludes with a breakdown of the ‘optimising’ phase in business improvement, in which learners study each of the six primary principles of effective business process improvement.  Module seven also includes a brief introduction to the fundamentals of the Six Sigma project management methodology and the applications of ‘lean’ in business process improvement.
