Are you creative and results-driven? Do you consider yourself to be naturally persuasive and a strong communicator? Do you have a knack for selling and a strong understanding of the way the consumer public thinks? If so, you could be cut out for an extraordinary career in marketing!

What Do Marketers Do?

Marketing refers to the process by which a product or service is presented to its intended target audience, in a manner that encourages and prompts purchase. Whether marketing to the consumer public or another business, the basic principles of marketing remain the same. Marketers are charged with the responsibility of identifying the needs, habits and behaviours of their respective target audience, in order to develop effective marketing plans and strategies accordingly.

Typical duties in a marketing capacity may include:

  • Comprehensive market research and audience analysis
  • Monitoring of audience behaviour and trends
  • Creating comprehensive marketing plans
  • Budgeting and forecasting of marketing costs
  • Analysis and enhancement of current marketing strategies
  • Devising and optimising branding
  • Public relations and human resource management
  • Assisting with product development and packaging

Am I Right For the Job?

In order to be successful in a marketing capacity, you have to be a creative thinker. Audience research and analysis may be important, but it is the way in which you work with this data makes all the difference. You need to be the kind of person who instinctively knows exactly how, when and via what medium to appeal to a target audience. It is a case of putting yourself in the shoes of those you are targeting and working in reverse.

Additional skills and character traits of importance in marketing include:

  • Artistic flair and creativity
  • Strong empathy and an interest in people
  • A naturally-curious and investigative persona
  • Relentless commitment and the desire to succeed
  • Flawless communication and organisation skills
  • The ability to keep to strict deadlines under intense pressure
  • Impeccable time management skills
  • Developed business and administrative acumen
  • The ability to work with complicated data

It is an incredibly dynamic professional specialism, that allows for total creativity and endless scope for career development. To build a strong reputation as a marketing professional is to enjoy a secure, rewarding and enjoyable career for life.

“I was always told I had the ‘gift of the gab’ and could probably sell snow to Santa Claus! It took some time, but I finally decided to pursue a career in marketing after a gentle nudge from my husband. I studied with BOLC, started out in market research and soon found myself in charge of an entire team. If you’d have told me this was possible three years ago, I’d have probably laughed it off!” – Caroline Crawford, Senior Researcher
